Planning the bigger picture 3
“If plan A doesn’t work, the alphabet has 25 more letters.”
Claire Cook
Whilst it is clearly essential to have a plan in place, it is unrealistic to think that it can be followed without the need for change and adaptation at various points along the way. It would be a misconception to think that planning is a one-off activity completed only at the beginning of a project. In reality, once a plan is made, it requires ongoing monitoring and adaptation taking into consideration progress, feedback and the wider environment.
It is important to note that a gymnast will not always react and learn in the way we expect them to, and progress can be difficult to predict. Therefore, good planning should promote adaptability and flexibility without the need to deviate from the main goals. This can be necessary as a result of a number of causes such as; rate of progress, change in situation, unexpected opportunity, unforeseen events, new trends/rule changes or new information.
Remember, the path of progress is never a linear one, and will invariably fluctuate up and down. So having a plan that is flexible and open to adaptation is essential for achieving long-term success in a world that will constantly change unexpectedly. Commit to achieving the goal, not necessarily the plan!
